Encouragement for Poets

Read, write, enjoy!

Starting out

If you are just starting to think about reading and writing poetry as a way to understand the world around you and to express yourself, then you have already started! Do you have a favorite poem? Your next step can be to think about how that poem affects you. Start a notebook of favorite poems. Copy each poem by hand into your notebook.

Here’s a favorite of mine. When I was growing into adolescence, I liked to read one of my parent’s books of poems by Robert Frost.

Stopping By Woods On a Snowy Evening

Read your favorite poem aloud to yourself often. Maybe you have already done this. Ask yourself: what do I notice about the sounds the poet uses in the poem? What do I see, hear, feel as I read the poem?

This is enough for now. Build your collection of favorites poem by poem- write them in a notebook. Read the poems aloud enough and you will find you have memorized some of them. Share widely!
